    UK Biocentre achieves award in environmental pledge

    UK Biocentre have recently achieved their Silver award for the Stockport Council Endorsed Environmental Business Pledge (EBP) and are working towards implementing energy savings identified from a resource efficiency review. In taking part in the pledge significant energy cost savings were identified, amounting to a saving of 77 tonnes of CO2 per annum. UK Biocentre is now working towards implementing additional changes, to further reduce the company’s carbon footprint.

    UK Biocentre's Dr Kristian Spreckley is a guest speaker at the Tohoku University Symposium in Tokyo

    UK Biocentre's Dr Kristian Spreckley visited Tohoku University in Tokyo to take part in their symposium, this year's title was “Message from Tohoku University - Learn from Disaster: Collaboration with International Community in New Era."

    Whilst there Kristian delivered a talk on how Biobanks will help to contribute to medicine in the future, whilst also focusing on the current projects directed by UK Biobank and UK Biocentre, as well hosting a seminar at the Tohoku Medical Megabank.

  • NIHR- National Biosample Centre appoints new MD


    The NIHR-National Biosample Centre (NIHR-NBC), established by the NIHR in Milton Keynes, is a national resource supporting biomedical researchers engaged in studies involving human volunteers. NIHR-NBC is moving rapidly into a development and growth phase and, as part of this, has appointed of Dr Mark Beggs as Managing Director. 

    Dr Beggs brings a wealth of experience of implementing and managing high throughput, industrial scale quality biomedical processes from his time in the pharmaceutical industry, the pharmaceutical automation industry and recently, as CEO of Stratified Medicine Scotland Innovation Centre.  His appointment will significantly strengthen the management team and make a major contribution to taking NIHR-NBC through its growth phase and ensuring it achieves its full potential.

    Dr Tim Peakman, Deputy CEO of UK Biobank, said: “We are delighted that Mark has come on board.  His long experience with automation and “at scale” biomedical processes will be of real value and will bring the National Biosample Centre fully up to speed”.  Dr Mark Beggs agreed: “I am very much looking forward to develop the NBC as a centre of excellence for industry and academia’s needs in pre-analytical biological sample processing and storage”.  Chairman of the NIHR-NBC, John Jeans, added: “These are exciting times for both UK Biocentre and the National Biosample Centre and I will be working closely with Tim and Mark to develop this nationally important initiative”.
